URGENT
UPDATE: 1/18/2007
A malware
virus/trojan continues to affect older versions of Symantec Anti-Virus
Client. This is a wide-spread outbreak accross all of WSU (and
the rest of the world).
IF you
are NOT running Symantec Anti-Virus Version 10.1.4.4000 or 10.1.5.5010
(the newer version is available as of today on this site), you
must upgrade or apply a specific patch. We have found it is easier
to install the upgrade. IF you are running Windows 95, 98, ME
or NT - contact us - DO NOT follow these instructions. If you
are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP, Please follow these steps:
1) Download
(to your desktop) the appropriate package of the new Symantic
Anti-Virus below - Managed or Unmanaged
2) Uninstall
the older version of Symantec AV - (the uninstall password is
"symantec"), reboot your PC
3) If the
Uninstall freezes, turn off your computer, turn it back on
4) Once the
PC has rebooted, Install the appropriate version (Managed or UnManaged
that you downloaded to your desktop from our website).
5) Run LiveUpdate
to insure you have the latest virus definitions.
6) Run a
full System Scan
(This virus
does not affect MacIntosh users, BUT, you must make sure your
systems are protected - current clients are available - see below)
Please remember
- it is your responsibility to maintain basic security on the
computer you use at work including virus protection. It is our
responsibility to provide the tools and assistance to help you
accomplish this. The current WSU Antivirus policy is located at
this link.
Current
WSU Anitvirus Policy
Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition (used to be called Norton) is the
current Anti-Virus software supported by Washington State University
and the College of Agriculture and Home Economics.
The new Symantec
AntiVirus Corporate Edition university site license allows the
installation of SAVCE on all WSU owned computers used by faculty,
staff, and employed graduate students. It is also licensed for
use in CAHNRS computer labs, including academic, 4-H, and Learning
Center labs.
The SAVCE
license does NOT include WSU students and their computers. Students
should contact the SCS student labs (Student Computing Services)
for their software.
The license
does include some limited use on "home computers." If
you use a personally owned computer for official WSU business
at home, you may install SAVCE on that computer. If you have two
computers, one used by yourself and the other by a family member,
you will be in violation of the license if you install it on the
latter.
If SAVCE
is installed on computers that do not meet the above criteria,
you are in violation of the WSU site license.
